Dev Blog #73
Greetings, comrades!

Often, when playing a new grand flight simulator, you get the feeling that something is missing from the gameplay — some link in mastering the new world between trial flights in the Quick Mission mode and the main large-scale single-player game modes, such as Career or Scripted Campaign. A kind of transitional link where you can reinforce the skills acquired in trial missions and prove to yourself that you have mastered the aircraft and are ready for the challenges of the simulator’s main gameplay. In Korea, we made sure that such an important link in mastering every aircraft we provide to players is definitely present.
We decided to implement this small but important game mode as part of our new big in-game Museum. The player first gets acquainted with the aircraft’s general appearance, history, features, equipment, and characteristics in the Museum’s dialogues. Then comes the moment of the aircraft’s first test in flight: in various quick scenarios in the mission planner or in its simplified "To Battle!" mode. There, the player also gains their first combat experience with their new machine and learns a lot through the system’s interface assistance while mastering the aircraft. And finally, having gained sufficient initial experience, the player wants to show and prove to themselves that they are ready to carry out major combat missions. This is what the Exams mode is designed for.
For each aircraft, we have created four special exam missions, by completing which the player faces their first significant challenge to their skills. The first mission tasks them with performing a takeoff, a high-speed low-altitude flight, and a landing with limited time. Here, the player tests their piloting skills; if something doesn’t work out, they can make other attempts, improving their handling of the aircraft and control of its main equipment. Having achieved success, they will be ready to perform all the main elements of piloting, takeoff, and landing.
In the second mission, the player will have to attack ground targets, and the conditions here are more difficult than those in ordinary tasks from the Mission Planner. Success in this mission gives the player confidence that, in the future, they will be able to act with confidence against enemy ground targets while flying this aircraft. In the third mission, the player must fight an enemy in the air. Air combat in each of the Korea aircraft has its own specifics: the roster of machines in our new project is incredibly diverse, and we are sure that everyone will find an aircraft to their liking. Therefore, the piloting features vary greatly, and the sighting equipment and cockpit visibility are also radically different. Having achieved success at this stage, the player gains initial confidence in air combat — a quality so necessary for them in the major combat tasks they will face on the front lines of the Commander Career.

All these missions, although typologically similar for different aircraft, have completely different settings. Each one presents its own unique interest and gives a special thrill when completing an exam task.
And finally, the fourth exam — Combat Mission. Here, the player must carry out a full-scale combat mission, which is most specific to the given aircraft model and generally corresponds to what they will have to do at the front lines. For the Il-10, this will be a ground-attack mission to prevent enemy armored forces from advancing. For the F-51D — intercepting a group of Il-10 ground attack aircraft to cover friendly ground troops. For the Yak-9 — direct escort of a group of Il-10s attacking enemy positions. For the La-11 — gaining air superiority (air patrol) with an encounter with a group of enemy fighters. The F-80C-10 will perform its characteristic role as a strike aircraft with an attack on an enemy airfield. The F-84E will also appear in the typical role of a fighter-bomber with the task of attacking enemy ground troops. The Sabre and MiG have their own little war: the MiG-15bis will perform its textbook task of intercepting a large formation of heavy enemy bombers at high altitude, while the F-86A-5, understandably, will receive an exam assignment in the form of escorting such a formation against MiG attacks.
The player will carry out the final fourth tasks not alone, but at the head of a group of combat aircraft, and the success of the exam will largely depend on the competence of their actions as a commander. Upon completing all exams for a single aircraft type, the player will receive a stamp on the aircraft card indicating successful completion of the exam tasks. We also plan to reflect this through Steam achievements. Each Exam mission has unique features, and by setting the goal of completing them, the player will gain an extremely engaging gameplay experience. Having finished the exam on any aircraft type, they will be quite confident that they are now capable of handling the full-scale Commander Career game mode.

Thus, the new Exams mode also represents an intermediate level of training, allowing players to master complex aviation equipment fairly quickly, provided they have basic skills.
