Dev Blog #59
Hello, comrades!

Today, we continue the interface topic. In any military conflict, some heroes perform feats of valor. Any country needs to remember them, and one way to record such events is through awards. Awards are, first and foremost, a memory, a memory of a significant event in a person’s life. Let’s talk about this aspect of the commander’s career mode in our new sim, Korea. Il2 Series.

We have awards in the pilot career mode in Great Battles, and even earlier in Rise of Flight — there, they are awarded automatically based on the player’s success. In Korea, we had to change this approach — now that you control a unit, personnel awards should not be automatic; you have to decide which of your subordinates to award. Moreover, the awards will somewhat affect gameplay itself: the timeliness and fairness of award nominations will affect your subordinates' morale, so you will need to keep an eye on this.
There will be a total of 66 awards in Korea, and you can see some of them here. An additional 30 will be added as part of the first year’s DLC. Your subordinates will have to meet realistic criteria for you, as their commander, to be able to nominate them for the appropriate award, meaning you won’t be able to hand out medals left and right. Of course, each award includes a description that explains its history, award criteria, and other important information.

A separate issue was that the North Korean and Chinese award systems at that time were intricate: in the 1950s, the new military tradition of the young socialist states was in the process of formation. Clarifying the realities of that time was, to a certain extent, an adventure and a challenge for us, but we managed to figure it out, and you will soon be able to see the results for yourself in the commander’s career mode.
In addition to realistic conditions and detailed descriptions, each award features an equally interesting image. Our artists created all award images in Korea with the utmost attention to detail. Their quality, historical accuracy, and adherence to the period have all been reconstructed to a high standard. In this, we are following our own tradition — such attention to detail has been a hallmark of our team since the days of Rise of Flight.
We will continue to tell you not only about how and what we have implemented, but also about some of the interesting difficulties we had to overcome during the development process.
